Richmond’s upping its arts and culture game with the opening of a new, dedicated 15,154-square-foot building. Dubbed the Richmond Cultural Centre Annex, the hub includes dance studios, a pottery zone, and a gallery space for local artists to show their work.

“The Richmond Cultural Centre Annex is an exciting new hub that will play an important role in strengthening Richmond’s already strong and vibrant arts and culture community,” says Mayor Malcolm Brodie in a statement. “Not only will it complement our City’s existing cultural facilities, it will showcase and foster the creativity of many emerging and established local artists and performers.”

Formerly the Minoru Seniors Centre, the building has been reimagined (in a $3.06 million project, for those wondering) for Richmond’s burgeoning arts and culture scene. Part of this includes a brand-new Media Lab for the Richmond Youth Media Program, where kids can learn digital media arts skills—from sound recording to 3-D printing. The centre will support programs from other local cultural institutions, including the Richmond Museum, Richmond Arts Centre, and Richmond Art Gallery. The building also includes 88 solar panels on the roof, which will generate 41,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually.

“Richmond is already home to a multitude of experienced and up-and-coming artists, and this new Annex is yet another opportunity to showcase that talent,” says Jane Fernyhough, Chair of the Richmond Arts Coalition, in a release. “The increased opportunities it offers for arts programs and arts creation are a tremendous and welcome addition to the cultural ecology of our community.”
