Mark Your Calendar: GYALFEST’s inaugural Vancouver music festival takes place at the Cobalt

A new music festival will be taking over the Cobalt this International Women’s Day.

GYALFEST, originally established in Toronto, is a music festival and party series specifically celebrating Black women and Women of Colour.

The inaugural Vancouver version of the bash, taking place on March 8, will feature musicians such as the Canadian Screen Award-winning R&B singer TiKA, Afro-soul musician Sadé Awele, and Ugandan-born, Vancouver-based artist Yvonne Kushe—just to name a few.

Jamaican-Canadian actress Sasha Hayden—who you may recognize from Vancouver-shot Netflix series Firefly Lane—is set to host the event, while DJs RAEDIAMENDZ and DJ CHIP$ will keep the vibe going between sets.

The event purposely acknowledges and bucks systemic discrimination typically faced by Black women and women of colour, instead celebrating the vibrance and diversity of the community.
